One Year Looks Good on Them

A lot happens between newborn photos and that first birthday.

There are adorable teeth now, maybe a few cute curls, and those belly rolls! Crawling has turned into standing, and standing might have even led to those exciting first steps. Along the way, a charming little personality has started to shine through. That's what makes first birthday portraits so wonderfully special!

Cake smash sessions at Karen Daniel Photography start with sweet portrait moments, long before the cake comes out. It's a special time for your little one to relax, get comfortable in the studio, and shine, sharing a glimpse of how much they've grown over the past year.

And eventually, yes, there will be some delightful frosting to enjoy!

What a Houston cake smash session actually looks like, from start to finish.

Before the Frosting

The first part of the session is all about letting your baby be themselves. Sitting, standing, crawling, showing off those adorable new steps, or becoming completely distracted by a favorite wooden toy. At this age, they’re busy. Curious. Expressive. Sometimes serious for absolutely no reason. And usually much more interested in exploring the studio than sitting exactly where anyone planned.

Simple styling leaves plenty of room for the best part of these sessions: all that personality.

The big smiles, wobbly steps, belly laughs, curious expressions, and everything in between are what make one-year portraits so much fun. There’s no need for an elaborate setup when there’s already this much happening in front of the camera.

Depending on the package selected, parents and siblings can step in for a few portraits too.

And then, it’s time for cake.

What Happens When the Cake Comes Out?

This is the part no one can really predict.

Some babies eagerly put both hands in, while others take their time, carefully tasting the frosting one finger at a time. Meanwhile, some stare at the cake with a look as if everyone in the room has made a very questionable decision. No matter which moment you witness, they're all irresistibly adorable.

There's no expectation for your baby to perform a perfect cake smash. They're encouraged to explore, taste, play, and figure out what they think about the whole experience at their own pace.

Sometimes, the biggest smiles light up the room. Other times, it’s the curious looks and suspicious little expressions that end up being everyone’s favorites.

When Should You Schedule Cake Smash Photos?

Cake smash sessions are usually photographed when babies are around 11 to 14 months old, but the best date depends on how you plan to use the photographs.

Want portraits ready for first birthday invitations or party decorations? Scheduling the session approximately two months before the birthday leaves enough time for photography, editing, and delivery before the celebration. Simply want to remember your baby around the one-year mark? The session can be scheduled closer to the birthday itself.

Because only a limited number of studio sessions are accepted each month, reserving your date ahead of time gives you more flexibility.

Cake, Clothes, and the Splash

There's less to bring than you might think.

Cake and baby wardrobe are provided for cake smash sessions, along with a selection of simple props, wooden toys, small chairs, and other pieces that work with the studio's clean style.

Instead of creating elaborate themed sets, styling stays intentionally simple, using neutral tones, natural textures, and small birthday details. This approach helps your photos stay timeless and ensures your baby remains the adorable focus, not blending into the background.

Have something personal you'd like to include? A favorite outfit or small meaningful item can always be discussed before the session.

Depending on the package selected, the cake smash can be followed by a milk or bubble bath.

By this point, there may be frosting in places no one expected. The splash gives your baby another chance to play while creating a completely different set of portraits from the cake portion of the session. Some babies splash enthusiastically. Others are much more interested in the bubbles.

A Quick Note About the Cake

Before the big session day, it can be a good idea to let your baby try cake or similar ingredients at home a couple of times. This way, they can become familiar and comfortable with the taste, making the experience even more enjoyable.

Please be aware that cake might include common allergens like dairy, eggs, or gluten. Since the studio isn't the best place to identify new sensitivities, it's wise to keep that in mind.

Any known food allergies should be shared before the session so the safest option can be planned. If your child has an allergy or dietary restriction, bringing a cake that you already know is safe may be recommended.

The messy part should be fun, not stressful.

What About Parents and Siblings?

Turning one is a pretty big milestone for the rest of the family too.

Family and sibling portraits are offered with some cake smash packages. These special shots are taken before the cake is brought out, so everyone stays clean and frosting-free. The focus stays simple: your family together at the end of a year that probably went much faster than expected.

Once family portraits are finished, your baby's birthday portraits can take center stage.

After the Cake Is Gone

About four weeks after the session, your finished portraits will be ready in a private online gallery. From there, favorites can be downloaded in high resolution, shared with family, and revisited long after the first birthday has come and gone.

Selected photographs are included in both color and matching black and white, giving you two beautiful ways to enjoy the moments you love most.

And for the ones that deserve more than a spot on your phone, professional prints, framed artwork, metal, and acrylic pieces are available directly through the gallery.
